Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens is one year into her term of replacing her disgraced predecessor, Mike Carona. In that time, Hutchens has made waves in repealing several of Carona's crony-based policies and has taken on a dysfunctional and highly publicized jail system. The OC Register profiled the Sheriff Sunday, and summarized her first year on the job like this: "With a matter-of-fact style, Hutchens has won allies and enemies. In just a year since she jogged up the steps of the Old County Courthouse to be sworn in as the county's 12th sheriff, she has made her mark. And not everyone likes what they see."
Hutchens was quoted in the article, by way of retort, that "If you stick to a position, you stand up in a firestorm and you don't bend, they will respect you for being ethical, for standing up for what's right." Having seen Hutchens in person a number of times, this rings true, and CountyNews believes she is to be commended for her work thus far.
You can see for yourself...Hutchens will take part in an online chat hosted by the Register at 2 p.m. July 10. Topics will include concealed weapons permits, changes in the jails and questions from readers.
