CCN has been following the epidemic of metal theft in cities across the state, and in Assemblyman Tom Berryhill has authored a number of guest editorials on the subject. News has now come out that nearly 5,000 water meters are unaccounted for in the city of Sacramento. A News 10 report raises the question of whether the missing meters might tie into an ongoing FBI investigation of "so-called black market" metal sales by utility and/or city employees.
Metal theft doesn't sound like a very big deal until you think about the toll of 5,000 water meters, or a city statue that was recently stolen and sold. This is a serious issue that's costing cities many thousands of dollars.
