The following is a guest piece by Hermosa Beach Mayor Pro Tem Michael DiVirgilio. He runs a blog devoted to his experience on the city council, with a very cool video feature -- Meetings in a Minute -- in which he summarizes council meetings for the benefit of interested city residents. Read what he has to say below, and check out his site here.
Last month I began a video series called 'Meetings In A Minute' where I post a brief video overview of our most recent Hermosa Beach City Council meeting.
The intention behind ‘Meetings In A Minute’ is to make city business more accessible and easier to follow. I’m interested in providing ways that make participation easier and help busy residents stay informed and engaged in their local government process.
Despite being a new tool, some of the benefits of creating this site are already visible. For instance, I’ve already received a healthy amount of feedback from residents that liked seeing a means of communication that was personalized and catered to them.
It also demonstrates a commitment (mine and the City’s) to including residents in the process and to maintaining open, active and informed public participation.
Finally, Meetings In A Minute is not the goal, but more likely one of many steps devoted towards a dedicated and continuous effort to include people in the process.
